Hector is a psychiatrist developing an overwhelming interest in the passage of time. His clients all look at time in their own way, whether it be the one who measures his life in dogs or the one doing everything she can to stay young. So Hector decides to explore this topic further and keeps notes of time exercises along the way – lessons to live by which he can impart on his clients as he sees fit. From encounters with Innuits to Chinese monks, Hector will learn that time is different to practically every person on the planet.
Hector Finds Time has interesting ideas. In a world obsessed with looking young or wishing away their youth, it is relevant and looking at the different ways people live is a good way at exploring the differences in cultures, genders, races etc. across the world. Hector though is not interesting and neither is his matter-of-fact manner, his relationship with his sad-therefore-must-be-depressed girlfriend. He apparently has money to burn, flying around the world to catch up with old friends and something is clearly lost in translation with his constant references to his girlfriend worrying he might "get up to mischief".
Overall, the theories behind Hector Finds Time would make for an interesting text book. In fact, Hector Finds Time is a psychiatry text book masquerading as a novel. Do not be fooled and do not waste your time… unless of course you are studying psychiatry.
