High Tide is a story about a small town, the people who live there, and those that have returned to their roots.
Kate's, a successful event planner who grew up in the town, but has been living in New York since leaving years before. She's returning after the sudden death of her mother to sort out and sell her childhood home, that is until she comes across something that draws her back into life in Pennfleet. Sam, is a single father of two teenagers. He's moved his small family to the town from London to try to rebuild their life by setting up a café after the loss of his beloved wife. Vanessa, is the a beautiful widow of an older, wealthy man. She has no children and nothing much to look forward to apart from running her beloved shop. And Nathan, who lives with his grandfather taking tourists for picnics in their small boat as well as working part-time as a driver for the local funeral director. He loves Pennfleet so much that the prospect of leaving has never occurred to him.
Each of their lives are about to change, some due to people from their pasts, others because of circumstances bringing them in to contact with people they’d never expected to meet. They all need different things to make them happy, but none of them expect to go through the experiences that they find themselves in. Every one of these people ends up with their lives changed in ways they couldn’t imagine and going along with them for the ride was great fun.
I’ve always enjoyed reading Veronica Henry’s books but this one has to be my favourite. In fact I wish there could be a High Tide 2, so that I could continue reading about the mixed and colourful characters in this novel. I read this book over two hot, sunny days, but it is also the perfect escape for a dark winter night. Pure escapism at its best.
