I am completely obsessed with all things New York and so was thrilled to receive The Bride Wore Size 12 by New York Times bestselling author Meg Cabot to review. It is the latest installment in the acclaimed Heather Wells series and, although I hadn’t read any of the previous books, I was aware of Meg Cabot as the author of The Princess Diaries series and was excited to see what was in store…
Heather Wells is busy combining planning her New York Plaza wedding with her day job at an NYU Halls of Residence. What she doesn’t need thrown into the mix is the death of a fresher in the first week of term, but that is exactly what she gets, which adds solving a murder mystery to her ever increasing ‘to do’ list. Just when she thinks things couldn’t get any worse, her long-lost mother turns up and a tearful family reunion is the last thing on Heather’s mind. Will she make it to the altar on time or will it be her funeral instead?
I loved the character of Heather. Smart and sassy with a good heart, I warmed to her straight away. Cooper is everything a hero should be, devastatingly handsome, kind and sensitive. I adore how Heather wants to swoon every time he enters a room! There is a strong supportive cast of other characters – workmates, students, family – and of course there is a Prince!
Obviously my favourite thing about this novel is the location of New York. The NYU setting brings back memories of Gossip Girl and I especially liked the blog style snippets that appeared at the beginning of some chapters. It made me long to be a fresher again, except this time at NYU with the life knowledge I have gained since and without the dodgy haircut.Part romance, part mystery, this really was chick lit with a twist. Although I hadn’t read any of the previous books in the Heather Wells series, it worked perfectly well as a stand-alone novel and only for my own curiosity (initially) when I noticed references to the back-story, and later because I enjoyed it so much, I will be looking out for the earlier installments. Witty enough to make me laugh, clever enough to keep me guessing and romantic enough to bring a tear to my eye The Bride Wore Size 12 had me gripped from start to finish.
