They say that you shouldn’t judge a book by its cover, but that’s difficult when the book looks as stunning as Tasmina Perry’s latest offering. Sparkling up at me with a cute blue ribbon and shiny Empire State Building on the cover, it screamed ‘READ ME!’ So I did… Amy Carrell is a damn good dancer, but since she injured her toe, she’s had to rely on waitressing shifts to keep herself afloat until she lands the job of her dreams in the West End. Amy is head-over-heels happy with her boyfriend and is even more excited at the suggestion that he might be about to pop the question. But, alas, the much longed for proposal doesn’t happen and broken hearted Amy is desperate to find a way out of London and back to New York for the holidays to see her family. Only problem – she has no money for a plane ticket. Until she stumbles across an advert in women’s magazine The Lady asking for someone to accompany an elderly woman to New York for the Christmas period. Amy jumps at the chance and the next thing she knows she is back in her favourite city on an adventure with none other than publishing royalty, Georgia Hamilton. While the two women explore New York, Georgia’s story of being a 1950’s debutant slowly unfolds, and it’s a tale of love and loss, and ultimately a girl too down-to-earth to fit into such an aristocratic world. This book is a joy. On the cover it claims: ‘Tasmina Perry as you’ve never seen her before’ and to some extent that’s correct; the book is far more subtle than fans will be used to. For a start, it doesn’t contain the murder, sex, scandal and mystery we have come to know as Perry’s signature style. What it does have is elegance, a beautiful setting, two key characters that are easy to love and root for, and a very well written story with lots to keep the reader interested. A lot slimmer than Tasmina’s usual offerings, but that only meant I was able to gobble the whole thing up more quickly! The Proposal has all of the sparkle and warmth of a Christmas novel as well as being ultimately about kindness and love. Fans of Tasmina Perry, New York, Christmas and love will be more than satisfied with this book. One for the warm and fuzzy amongst us. 9/10 MORE ABOUT THIS BOOK Tasmina Perry’s Website
