Following a troubled phase of her life Elsie embarks on a mission to reach for her dreams with a little help from sisters Daisy and Guin, a dash of handsome in the shape of hunky Oliver Hogarth and a shot of humour from the unusual Woody. ‘When I fall in Love’ is a sweet mix of fun, humour and surprises! This novel made me feel warm and fuzzy from the first page; Elsie is a loveable character whom I immediately felt empathy for and I was rooting for her all the way through the book. After an impromptu performance in a local beach front café (You never say no to a Maynard family double dare!) Elsie is talent-spotted by Woody, an ex-member of 80’s band ‘Hellfinger’ who manages to persuade her to start a local choir with him. Elsie jumps at such a new and exciting opportunity and within a few short weeks they have created ‘The Sundaes’, a mish-mash of Brighton’s young, old and talented and Elsie is happier than she has been in a long time. She even starts dating again, if only arrogant Torin Stewart wouldn’t keep popping up to play the hero when she least wants it. Set in glorious Brighton, a favourite place of mine, Miranda Dickinson’s writing describes the seaside town and it’s bucket load of character perfectly, it is also the perfect setting for the variety of interesting characters that made me smile with each page turn. For me, the best part of this novel is the characters – they are each unique and all of them help Elsie on her way to rediscovering her self. Sisters Guin and Daisy are head strong and supportive whilst each trying to juggle their own lives, Dad Jim and his hippy ways are fantastically entertaining and then there’s Cher, owner of ice cream café ‘Sundae and Cher’ who is just as fabulous as the ice cream she creates. Finally there’s Woody and the members of the choir. Each with their own stories and talents that make this book such a genuine joy to read. 7/10 MORE ABOUT THIS BOOK
