1. Unplug the internet and disconnect all telephones during a writing session, and protect yourself from noise. I always wear earplugs.
2. Have a lot of ambition for your books, but a lot of doubt about yourself.
3. Have rituals, like writing in the morning, or after a siesta, when the spirit hasn’t been too overwhelmed by news and information or too many emotions.
4. Always have a piece of paper at hand to jot down ideas. Always and everywhere.
5. Always push ahead as much as possible with what you have in your head, without going home and saying “I’ll finish off tomorrow”. Nothing might happen the next day. You have to strike while the iron is hot, as we say in France.
