There is something quite romantic and exciting about setting a book in New York. A woman about town in New York allows so many possibilities and adventures. It is after all, the city that never sleeps. And it is a city we all know, even if we haven't been there. Last week Miranda Dickinson announced on her vlog that she is returning to New York for her sixth novel, to the same florists from Fairytale of New York. But it won't be a sequel, it will be "an almost sequel". So to celebrate, here are ten books, based in New York.
1. Fairytale of New York by Miranda Dickinson – Rosie, an English girl, decides to make a life for herself in New York as a florist. And she has a great life, lovely friends and the florist shop she owns is taking off. But Rosie has a secret, the real reason why she is in New York, and it is stopping her from finding love.
2. The Opposite of Love by Julie Buxbaum – Emily, a successful New York lawyer, ditches her boyfriend because he is about to propose. She can't explain why. But she knows it's more about her, than it is about him.
3. The Love of Her Life by Harriet Evans – Kate has been living in New York after fleeing London three years ago. The novel switches from past to present letting the reader find out why.
4. The Nanny Diaries by Nicola Kraus and Emma McLaughlin – Co-written by two former nannies, this tells the story of Nan, the nanny, who works for Mrs X, looking after 4-year old, Grayer. Mrs X is one of the privileged New York/Park Avenue mums, the type that has her son scheduled for activities for (almost) every hour of the day.
5. Anybody Out There by Marian Keyes – This is Anna Walsh's story. She is now living in New York with a gorgeous husband and a brilliant job. But, despite seeing Aiden everywhere, he won't answer her calls and emails.
6. Jessie Hearts NYC by Keris Stainton – A book for Young Adults (although I adored it too). Jessie, an English girl, arrives in New York hoping to forget about her awful ex. Finn, a New Yorker, is in love with his best friend's girlfriend. He and Jessie could be perfect, if they ever meet.
7. An Englishwoman in New York by Anne-Marie Casey – Lucy's husband loses his job and is relocated to New York. Lucy is forced to give up her London life and is homesick and resentful. Then she starts an affair. With the city itself.
8. From Notting Hill to New York…Actually by Ali McNamara – The sequel to From Notting Hill with Love…Actually. Scarlett has settled on her leading man. But a holiday to New York soon brings new people into her life…
9. New York Valentine by Carmen Reid – The fifth in a series of books, Annie is a personal shopper with a job in the heart of Manhattan. But her husband is in London and he wants her back. Annie's true love is London, but her new love is New York.
10. I Heart New York by Lindsey Kelk – Angela is fleeing the worst wedding of her life. So she heads to the airport and hops on a plane with little more than Louboutins and her passport. She's in love with the most fabulous city in the world.
